Opals: a hydrated amorphous form of silica (SiO2H2O) and contain between 3 - 21% water by weight. Opals are resulting product and proof of a 30 million year-old chemical chain reaction. It takes about 5 - 6 million years to produce 1 cm of mature opal. Opals are a mineraloid, not crystalline form of silica - where flashes of color are created by white light. Opals maybe transparent, translucent or opaque... with backgrounds of black, white and nearly every other color of the spectrum visible to the human eye.
