Mother Mary and the Flames of St Reims Cathedral
Beautiful French Blessed Mother Virgin Mary medal with a depiction of The Our Lady of Reims and Holy Child Jesus Christ statue from the Cathedral of Reims. She holds a single fleur de lis symbolic of devotion to France. The background billows with flames and smoke from the German WWI bombardment and subsequent fire at the famed cathedral. Beneath her is a Latin inscription in sculptural font which translates to "hello our hope". On the reverse is an ethereal depiction of the cathedral during the fire and the date 1914. The Latin inscription translates to "They have set fire to your sanctuary, they have defiled the tabernacle of your name".
Signed and designed by the master engraver Ovide Yencesse 1869-1947.
