French Art Deco Silver Lion Medal
This rare hallmarked silver French medal features a figural lion bail and what appears to be Herucles (one of the best-known heroes in Greek and Roman mythology and often associated with the lion) On the reverse is a rayed rising sun inscribed ‘PAX ET LABOR’ (Latin = Peace and Labour). A silver French assay mark is on the edge. The medal was instituted in 1927 to reward those involved in physical education and was awarded for long service or for signal achievement, for example in Olympic Games, national and international championships. The fabrication of the medal was temporarily discontinued during the period of 1939 to 1945 and was replaced with another design in 1946. It had a lifespan of only 12 years (1927 - 1939).
