Antique Italian Saint Francis of Assisi Medal
This spectacular Italian St Francis of Assisi medal features an ethereal depiction of Saint Francis in the wilderness and is filled with spiritual symbolism. He prays in front of an altar with a skull, holy cross and missal. The skull is symbolic of his frequent rumination on death and his devotion to God. On the reverse is what appears to be a blessing in Latin and across the bottom border of the medallion is a dedication to the tomb of Saint Francis. The tomb remained hidden for almost 600 years and was discovered beneath the Basilica di San Francesco in 1818.
