VERCINGETORIX: The Druid King "Vercingetorix" (82 BC – 46 BC) was a chieftain of the Arverni tribe. He was the man responsible for uniting the Gauls in a revolt against Roman forces during the last phase of Julius Caesar's Gallic Wars. However, in a later battle with Caesar, Vercingetorix was captured and held prisoner for five years. In 46 BC, as part of Caesar's triumph, Vercingetorix was paraded through the streets of Rome and then executed by strangulation on Caesar's orders. The French, to this day, consider Vercingetorix a hero and have statues around the country in his honor.

Gaul (Latin: Gallia) was the name of the country now known as France. During the Iron Age and Roman era, Gaul encompassed present day France, Luxembourg, Belgium, and parts of Switzerland, Northern Italy, the Netherlands and Germany. During the period of the French Third Republic (1870 to 1940), the authorities often referred to France as "our old Gallic nation".
